We're looking for hundreds of volunteer performers to play a major part in the event. Forming a giant circuit around the Quayside, the mass cast will perform at key moments during the show, surrounding the audience and bringing the story to life.

No experience is required – we're looking for anyone and everyone to join in! Whether you’re a trained dancer, enjoy the occasional disco, or have never tapped your foot to a beat – you’re more than welcome.

This year, the Bupa Great North Run will reach its one millionth finish - a world first for an event of its kind.

On Thursday 4 September, the NewcastleGateshead Quayside and the River Tyne will be transformed into a huge outdoor arena for the Great North Run Million Opening Ceremony, marking the start of the official countdown to the 1 millionth finish of the Bupa Great North Run on Sunday 7 September in South Shields.

The Great North Run Million Opening Ceremony will feature live performances by Dire Straits legend Mark Knopfler, drum'n'bass superstars Chase & Status, and Mercury Prize nominees The Unthanks, fireworks and pyrotechnics, mass choreography, a giant floating sculpture, video mapping onto the Sage Gateshead and more!

This spectacular event will tell the incredible story of the North East - a story of innovators in industry, sport and technology, of ordinary people working together to achieve extraordinary things - inspired by the energy of a million runners powering Tyneside’s past and future.
